| Los Angeles native David Moyer is quickly making a name for himself as a saxophonist, composer-arranger, producer, and band leader. He is known for his infectious energy during live performance and on recordings for his robust sound, creative arrangements, and doubling prowess. Born and raised in Los Angeles, David grew up with his ears tuned constantly into the endless world of sounds around him. First picking up the guitar in the 4th grade in a futile attempt to imitate Kirk Hammett, he wisely switched to the tenor saxophone three years later. After two years of playing the tenor in the ‘A’ Jazz Ensemble at the prestigious Hamilton High School Academy of Music in Los Angeles, David switched his focus to the baritone. Following high school, David earned his B.A. in Saxophone Performance from UCLA (’02), where he studied with jazz luminaries Gary Foster, Gerald Wilson, Kenny Burrell, and Billy Higgins. It was Foster, whose clarinet and flute playing sparked interest in exploring the worlds of the other woodwind instruments, who encouraged David to experiment with the bass clarinet. During this time, he led his own group, The David Moyer Sextet, which performed throughout Los Angeles. After finishing school, David toured the country with the Columbia Artists’ production of ‘Our Sinatra,’ introducing him to life on the road. Since that time, he has performed and/or recorded with Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, Natasha Bedingfield, Robin Thicke, Dakah Hip Hop Orchestra, Guru, The Anthony Wilson Nonet, The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, DJ Premier, Raheem DeVaughn, Saul Williams, The Elected, Daara J, Jenny O, and others. His compositional and production talents were featured in collaboration with Danny T. Levin and Tommy V in the Warner Bros./Intersection Entertainment film ‘Andale Posse,’ and has musically contributed to Showtime Entertainment productions. David has performed internationally at venues such as Walt Disney Concert Hall, The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and Baltimore’s Symphony Hall. He served as the Director of Instrumental Music at Los Angeles’ 32nd Street Visual and Performing Arts Magnet from 2005-2007. Rounding out his musical explorations, David is a founding member of the Los Angeles-based band The Ventriloquists, along with close musical cohorts Danny T. Levin and Jeff ‘Jolly’ Glassberg, introducing the keyboard to his arsenal. He can also be heard playing his saxophone with Danny, drummer Kevin Kanner, and a host of other killing musicians in The White Belts as well. For a selected discography, click here.
